What a monitor trap actually does
A sticky monitor trap, sometimes called a glue board, is a flat adhesive card that catches crawling insects that cross it. It doesn't control or reduce a pest population in any meaningful way — its entire job is information: what's moving through a space, roughly how much, and where. That makes it fundamentally a detection tool, not a treatment, which is exactly why it pairs so well with an identification-first approach rather than a "spray first, ask questions later" one.
Why placement matters more than trap count
A trap catches nothing if it isn't in the path a bug actually travels. Crawling insects overwhelmingly move along walls and through corners rather than across open floor, so a handful of well-placed perimeter traps outperforms a larger number scattered randomly. Corners in particular deserve a trap regardless of room size — every rectangular room has exactly four of them, and they're natural pinch points for anything moving along a baseboard.
Reading a standard spacing guideline
A common starting point in pest monitoring is a trap every 10 to 20 feet along the perimeter of a room, with additional interior traps once the open floor area gets large enough that activity away from the walls could otherwise go unnoticed. Kitchens, basements, and pantries — the rooms most likely to have food debris or moisture — are the highest-value places to start.
What to do with what you catch
An empty trap after a couple of weeks is a genuinely useful result — it tells you the conditions you were worried about aren't currently active. A trap that fills quickly tells you where to focus your exclusion and sanitation effort, and often lets you identify exactly which bug you're dealing with before deciding whether it's a beneficial bug, a harmless nuisance, or something worth addressing.
How long to leave a trap before checking it
A single day tells you almost nothing — activity levels naturally vary night to night, and a quiet 24 hours doesn't rule much out. A one-to-two week placement gives a far more reliable picture, long enough to average out normal variation while still catching a developing trend early. After that first check, replacing the trap and repeating the same placement over several cycles is what actually reveals whether an issue is growing, shrinking, or was never really there.
What a plain sticky trap does and doesn't tell you
An unscented glue board catches whatever happens to walk across it, which is exactly what makes it useful for general awareness monitoring rather than targeting one specific species. It won't tell you where a colony or nest is located, and it won't meaningfully reduce a population on its own — both of those are jobs for a different kind of pest-management approach entirely. What it reliably tells you is whether crawling activity in a given room is present, growing, or absent, which is the exact piece of information most people are missing when they're deciding whether a bug sighting was a one-off or the start of something worth addressing.
