Beneficial Bugs You Should Never Kill: Spiders, Ladybugs, and Ground Beetles
It's easy to treat every bug sighting the same way — a small jolt of alarm, then a decision about what to do next. But a fair number of the bugs you're most likely to run into are actually working in your favor, and squashing them on reflex trades away free pest control for nothing.
House spiders: the quiet exterminators
A common house spider building a web in an unused corner isn't a sign anything has gone wrong — it's a small, self-sustaining trap for flies, gnats, and other flying nuisances that would otherwise be bothering you directly. House spiders don't build webs near where people spend time, don't chase, and pose no structural risk whatsoever. The web itself is the evidence they're already doing their job.
Ladybirds: aphid control with wings
A ladybird (ladybug) showing up on a windowsill or houseplant is looking for aphids, and it's very good at finding them — a single ladybird can eat dozens of aphids a day. If you garden at all, or keep houseplants that occasionally attract small sap-feeding insects, a ladybird is doing unpaid work you'd otherwise have to do yourself.
Ground beetles: the nighttime patrol
Ground beetles are the bugs you're least likely to notice doing their job, because they work at night and stay low to the ground. They prey on slugs, caterpillars, and other soft-bodied garden pests, and rarely wander indoors at all — if you do spot one inside, it's most likely a wrong turn on the way somewhere else, not a sign of anything wrong.
The house centipede: unsettling, but on your side

Life stages: the larva often does more work than the adult

When a beneficial bug still becomes a nuisance in numbers
Beneficial doesn't always mean pleasant to live with at scale. It helps to recognize the evidence these bugs leave behind, since it's easy to mistake for a separate issue. A patch of curled, discolored leaves on a houseplant with small dark specks nearby is usually aphid damage that predates any predator arriving — and finding a ladybird or lacewing larva right there is a sign help has already shown up, not a second infestation to deal with. A fresh, intact web spanning a corner is a spider actively working, not a sign of neglect; an old, dusty, abandoned-looking web with no spider in residence is the one actually worth clearing away. Small holes or trails in damp mulch or soil near a foundation are more often ground beetle or pillbug activity — neither of which damages the structure — than anything worth treating as a warning sign.
