How the size bands work
Size is one of the fastest first filters in bug identification, even though it’s never enough on its own. This tool converts whatever unit you measured in to millimetres, then places that length in one of five bands — Tiny, Small, Medium, Large, and Very Large — each anchored to a handful of familiar household bugs whose adult body length commonly falls there.
Measure the body only, not legs, antennae, or wingspan — a wolf spider’s legs can span several times its actual body length, which is what actually determines the band.

What should I measure — body length, or leg span?
Body length only, from the front of the head to the tip of the abdomen. Leg span (especially on spiders) can look dramatically larger than the actual body and will throw off the size band.
Why does the tool give a size band instead of an exact species?
Body length alone can't identify a species — many unrelated bugs overlap in size. Pair this with the spider-vs-insect ID key (leg count and body segments) and the benign-vs-nuisance classifier to narrow things down further.
My bug is right at the edge of two bands — does that matter?
Not much. The bands describe common ranges, not hard biological cutoffs, and plenty of individual bugs fall a millimetre or two outside their "typical" band depending on age, sex, and feeding state.
